"When Peter Met Lisa"
Peter and I have been together for almost 7 years and in all of our
discussions about getting married (there were many!) he always said, "the
proposal has to be a surprise, it has to be truly "us", and it has to be
perfect. Well, it was all three!
We had invited friends to our house to watch movies at a makeshift drive-in
theater in our back yard. The movies were projected on the side of our garage
thanks to a borrowed projector connected to our VCR. We were all comfortable
reclined in lawn chairs eating candy and popcorn. The movie he suggested we
watch was my favorite, "When Harry Met Sally". The movie has short scenes
throughout where married couples tell the story of how they met and married. At
the end of my favorite of those stories, Peter's head popped up on the screen. I
was shocked and so were our friends!
He had recorded himself in the style of the couples in the movie. He said" Lisa
and I had been together for a long time. So long, in fact that some people
thought I was never going to propose. But when you've been with someone for
nearly 7 years, you can't just slip a Ring into a plate of linguini and after a
heimlich maneuver or even possibly a trip to the dentist, hope that everyone
will live happily ever after. With Lisa, it had to be perfect. I considered
proposing when we were in Venice, or on a sunny beach in Mexico. I even
considered proposing on top of the Empire State Building. But none of those
places felt right.
So, Lisa, why don't you tell them how I proposed?"
Then he came out of the house in a the suit he was wearing in the video (he had
run in and changed clothes) and stood in front of me and said "I forgot
everything I was going to say. Lisa, words cannot express how special you are
to me. But if you'll say yes, I'll spend the rest of my life showing you." Then
he got on one knee and asked, "Lisa Ann Watson, will you marry me?"
When I pulled myself together I said, "I'm going to say to you the same thing I
have been saying for years. You don't have to worry because I'm going to say
yes!"
There wasn't a dry eye in the group! Then someone jokingly said "where's the
champagne?" and Peter said, "It's in the garage on ice!" He'd thought of
everything. We popped the corks and celebrated into the wee hours with many of
our dearest friends!
Later I'll record my version of the story on the video and we'll have those
memories to relive and share for the rest of our lives!
Lisa
